RAISING OUR VOICES TO BRING AWARENESS TO CEREBRAL PALSY.
Cerebral Palsy – also known as CP - is a broad group of disorders that disrupt a person’s ability to move, sit, stand, walk, talk and use their hands. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles.
CP is the most common motor disability in children. It is the second most common disability in children, after Autism. CP is a permanent physical condition that affects roughly 800,000 children, adolescents and adults in the United States. It can be as mild as just a weakness in one hand to complete lack of movement. A majority of the time Cerebral Palsy affects a person’s ability to walk, communicate, eat, write, or dress themselves. Cerebral Palsy is not progressive, is not a disease and is not contagious.
In addition, 75% of individuals with Cerebral Palsy are also very likely to have one or more additional developmental or intellectual disabilities; which can include epilepsy, AUTISM, vision impairments or blindness, hearing loss.
There is no CURE or SINGLE BEST TREATMENT for individuals with CP. After a CP diagnosis is made, a team of health professionals work together to develop a plan to help the individual reach his or her full potential. Common treatments include: Medicines, Surgery (many times multiple surgeries), special braces, special equipment and physicial, occupational, speech and/or oral motor therapy. In almost all cases, these treatments are required throughout the individuals lifetime.
Post it, tweet it, share it. The more people you tell, the more help we can receive.
